First Lesson! September 25, 2008

Beginner Band First Week Practice Sheet

Practice at least 5 days for 5 to 10 minutes.  Of course you may practice more!

All wind instruments (Flute, Clarinet, Sax and Brass) should do the following:

LONG  TONES:

Play each tone that you learned today for 8-12 slow foot taps.  Play each tone 10 times like we did in class.  Play like this;

Breathe and Play! (1 ...2…3…4…5…6…7…8… off)  Rest for 8 counts and do it again!

BE SURE TO TAP YOUR FOOT ON EVRY COUNT!

Sit up straight, feet flat on floor and get a good breath before you play.  If you do not get 8 counts at first, keep working!  Do as many beats as you can and work up to 8 beats.  If you can do 12 beats or 16 beats, Great!  With practice and patience you will get it.

Listen for a steady tone!  Not a saggy or droopy tone.  Play with a very solid and steady tone each time. (Strong air stream)

REMEMBER!

DO NOT PUFF CHEEKS!  DO NOT WIGGLE YOUR BODY WHEN YOU PLAY!  REMEMBER TO START THE SOUND PROPERLY.

Flutes…start your sound by saying, “PU” and keep the lips close together when you play.

Trumpets… remember to buzz with the mouthpiece a little before you play.  Buzz fast and slow.

Sax and Clarinet be sure to keep your bottom teeth slightly covered with your bottom lip. Keep you top teeth firm on the top of the mouthpiece.

Last Part!

Don’t forget to play “Three Blind Mice” several times every day, 2 foot taps for each tone.

Try to figure out Mary Had a little Lamb or Hot Cross Buns using the 3 notes that you have learned.  Do you best!

Play and listen for a steady tone!

Practice holding and fingering your instrument to help make it easier to play.

Brass… buzz with the mouthpiece a little before you play.  Buzz fast and slow.  Siren buzz - like we did in class and play a song on the mouthpiece.

Sax and Clarinet be sure to keep your bottom teeth slightly covered with your bottom lip. Keep you top teeth firm on the top of the mouthpiece.  Practice holding and fingering your instrument to make it easier to hold

Last Part!

Review all of Lesson 1 each night that you play.  Also work on the lesson sheets that we used in class. Please review Lesson 1 and work on Lesson 2.  Always read and finger your notes on each line of music several times (4 times) before you play.  Once you can identify the notes and fingerings quickly try your best to play each line!

We must READ the music and understand what it is telling us to play!!!!  Play and read SLOWLY!!!!  Always tap your foot on all notes and rests!
